Organic nitrogen fertilizers from upcycled collagen turn a side stream of the leather and gelatine industry into a high-grade plant nutrient. Nitrogen is bound in protein chains and released by soil microbes rather than dissolved — which gives a short, medium and long-term release profile in one product. Typical grades contain 11–14% N. What does “upcycled collagen” mean exactly?
Collagen is the protein of hide and connective tissue. Material that does not enter leather or gelatine production is hydrolysed and dried instead of disposed of. The result is a protein-rich, nitrogen-bearing raw material — a genuine by-product route rather than a purpose-grown feedstock.
Why does collagen nitrogen release in several stages?
Part of the nitrogen sits in short peptide chains that soil microbes mineralise within days. Longer chains and the coarser granule core take weeks. The result is an initial release, a plateau over the main growing period and a residual effect — without the peak that mineral nitrogen produces.
Is the product approved for organic farming?
Collagen and leather-based nitrogen fertilizers are in principle eligible under Regulation (EU) 2018/848, but approval depends on the batch, the manufacturer and the respective input list (FiBL, Bioland, Demeter, national lists). We supply the current certificate for each lot — please ask before ordering.
How does it compare to urea on cost per kg of nitrogen?
Per kg of N, organic nitrogen is clearly more expensive than urea. The comparison only becomes meaningful if you factor in the value of the organic matter, the lower leaching and volatilisation losses, the certification premium and the absence of any nitrate application peak.
Does the product smell or attract animals?
Hydrolysed and dried collagen granulate has a mild, protein-typical odour that subsides within a few days after application. On turf and in gardens, slight interest from dogs and wildlife is possible immediately after spreading; incorporation or irrigation solves this.
